Digital Rate & Totalising Flowmeter
- Published in Banksia Controls News
Titan Enterprises has announced the launch of the Pulsite Solo an affordable battery powered rate and total flowmeter. Offering the flexibility of panel, wall or surface mounting this new digital display instrument has been designed for use with switch, coil and magnetic sensor inputs. With housing constructed from durable polymer, and sealed to IP65 specifications, the Pulsite Solo can be used in a wide range of operating environments.
Programming is simple using two push buttons and logical prompts in English on the LCD display. The replaceable battery life is estimated to be well in excess of 5 years when the Pulsite Solo is used as a totaliser. With rate readings the life of the Pulsite Solo will depend on the duty cycle but is still several years. The Pulsite Solo can also be externally dc powered if required. The meter will take frequencies from dc through to 2 KHz and scale them to display rate or total. The scaling factors are adjustable from 0.01 to 9999 and the time base is selectable as seconds, minutes or hours.
How Does the Pulsite Solo Support Flow Measurement?
A digital rate totalising flowmeter setup can provide two useful types of information: the current flow rate and the accumulated quantity of liquid that has passed through the system. The Pulsite Solo provides a local digital display for these measurements when connected to a compatible flowmeter or sensor.
Rather than measuring the liquid independently, the display receives an input signal from the connected flow measurement device and converts that signal into readable rate or total information. This makes it useful where operators need to check flow information directly at the installation point.
The Pulsite Solo supports switch, coil and magnetic sensor inputs, allowing it to work with different flow measurement configurations. Titan also specifies battery and DC power options, which gives users flexibility when planning an installation.
Rate Measurement and Total Flow Measurement
Rate measurement shows how quickly liquid is moving through the system at a given time. This information can help an operator check whether a process is running at the expected flow condition.
Total flow measurement records the accumulated quantity that has passed through the meter over a period of operation. This can be useful where the overall volume transferred or processed needs to be monitored.
The appropriate display setting depends on what information is needed from the application. Some installations primarily require an accumulated total, while others need regular access to the current flow rate.
Where Can a Digital Rate and Totaliser Be Useful?
Digital flow indication can be useful where the primary flowmeter produces a signal but does not provide the local display required by the operator.
Possible uses include process monitoring, equipment testing, liquid transfer systems and other measurement installations where flow information needs to be viewed near the meter.
The installation should still be planned around the flowmeter, liquid, sensor output, power requirements and operating environment. A display cannot compensate for a flowmeter that is unsuitable for the application.
Integrating Flowmeters With Electronic Indicating Instruments
A flow measurement system often consists of more than the flowmeter itself. Depending on the application, an electronic display or controller can receive the meter output and present the information in a format that is easier to monitor.
Banksia Controls supplies electronic indicating instruments, including rate totalisers, batch controllers and flow computers designed for use with its flowmeter range.
When selecting an indicating instrument, consider:
- the output signal produced by the flowmeter
- whether rate, total or both measurements are required
- available power at the installation
- panel, wall or surface mounting requirements
- environmental protection requirements
- the expected signal frequency and scaling requirements
Checking these points before installation can help ensure that the display and flowmeter are compatible.
Choosing the Right Flow Monitoring Setup
The correct setup depends on the complete measurement application rather than the display alone.
Start by confirming what liquid is being measured and the expected flow range. The flowmeter should then be selected for those operating conditions. Once the appropriate meter has been identified, its output can be matched with a suitable rate indicator, totaliser or controller.
For example, Banksia Controls supplies several flowmeter technologies for different applications, including turbine flowmeters and other industrial flow measurement options. Turbine meter selection depends on factors such as liquid type, flow range, pressure, temperature and installation conditions.
Matching the meter, sensor output and indicating instrument as a complete system is more reliable than selecting each component independently.
Need Help Selecting the Right Flow Monitoring Setup?
Choosing the right combination of flowmeter and indicating instrument depends on factors such as the liquid being measured, flow range, signal output, power supply, mounting requirements and operating environment.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is a digital rate and totaliser?
A digital rate and totaliser receives a signal from a compatible flow measurement device and displays information such as the current flow rate or accumulated flow total. The exact functions depend on the instrument and connected flowmeter.
Does the Pulsite Solo measure flow directly?
The Pulsite Solo is a digital rate and total display instrument. It works with compatible flow-metering devices and sensor inputs to display flow information rather than acting as the primary flow-sensing element itself.
Can the Pulsite Solo operate on battery power?
Yes. The Pulsite Solo supports battery operation and also provides an external DC power option, allowing the power arrangement to be selected according to the installation requirements.
What is the difference between flow rate and total flow?
Flow rate indicates how quickly liquid is moving through a system at a particular time. Total flow represents the accumulated quantity that has passed through the measurement point.
What should be checked before connecting a flowmeter to a rate totaliser?
Check the flowmeter output type, signal compatibility, required display information, power supply, mounting arrangement and operating environment. The selected flowmeter should also be suitable for the liquid, flow range and process conditions.
